What is a Smart Applicant Score?
The Smart Applicant Scores is a CDL Suite feature that automatically evaluates each application and assigns a score ranging from 1.0 to 10.0. The score is designed to help recruiters quickly prioritize applications for review and identify applications that may require additional attention.
Unlike subjective recruiter ratings, Smart Applicant Scores uses a consistent methodology and evaluates only objective information captured within the application itself. Every application is scored using the same Scoring Factors and Deductions, creating a standardized way to compare applications across applicants, recruiters, locations, and carriers.

Why Smart Applicant Scoring Was Created
Recruiters often review dozens or even hundreds of applications each week. While experienced recruiters quickly develop an instinct for identifying stronger applications, those evaluations can vary from person to person.
The Smart Applicant Score was created to provide a consistent starting point for application review. Rather than replacing recruiter judgment, the Smart Applicant Score helps recruiters identify applications that appear complete, well-documented, and generally stronger based on objective information provided by the applicant.
The goal is not to determine whether an applicant is a good driver. The goal is to provide an objective assessment of the application that was submitted.
How the Smart Applicant Score Works
Every application begins with a score of 10.0.
CDL Suite then evaluates the application using a set of Scoring Factors and applies deductions when specific conditions are present. Examples include:
- Limited driving experience
- Recent accidents
- Recent traffic convictions
- DUI convictions
- License suspensions, revocations, or denials
- Failed or refused DOT drug tests
- Employment gaps
- Missing employment history
After all applicable deductions are applied, the resulting score is displayed within CDL Suite.
The minimum score is 1.0 and the maximum score is 10.0.
Score Color Coding
To help recruiters quickly identify applications that may deserve additional attention, Applicant Scores are color coded.

Green Scores
Green scores generally indicate applications with few or no significant deficiencies based on the Scoring Factors used by CDL Suite.
Yellow Scores
Yellow scores indicate applications that may contain one or more notable issues, such as limited experience, employment gaps, or incomplete employment history.
Red Scores
Red scores indicate applications with significant deficiencies, substantial missing information, or multiple risk factors that may require additional review.
The Smart Application Score vs. Applicant Quality
The Smart Applicant Scoring is designed to evaluate the application, not the applicant.
A lower score does not automatically mean an applicant is unqualified. Likewise, a higher score does not guarantee that an applicant will meet a carrier's hiring requirements.
For example, an applicant may receive deductions because portions of their employment history were left blank. In another case, an applicant with excellent driving experience may still receive deductions for a recent accident or traffic conviction.
The Smart Applicant Score should be viewed as an objective measurement of the information provided within the application and not as a final hiring recommendation.
Transparency Matters
CDL Suite believes scoring systems should be transparent.
Users can view a score breakdown directly within the Smart Applicant Score popup to see how a particular score was calculated. This allows recruiters to understand the factors that contributed to the score and discuss potential issues with applicants when appropriate.
Using Applicant Scoring Effectively
The Smart Applicant Score works best when used alongside QuickView, employment history review, safety screening, interviews, and company hiring standards.
- Many recruiters use Applicant Scoring to:
- Prioritize which applications to review first
- Identify incomplete applications
- Compare applications using a consistent standard
- Quickly spot applications that may require follow-up
- Encourage applicants to provide complete employment histories
The Smart Applicant Score is intended to help recruiters work more efficiently while maintaining full visibility into how each score was calculated.
